Kisharon Langdon offers a variety of support to promote students’ wellbeing.
The different types of support we offer include:
- Access to a personal tutor
- Enrichment activities
- Resources based around the college
- Therapeutic input
- Tutorial programme
- Zones of Regulation
Access to a personal Tutor
Personal tutors play a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of our learners. Through regular 1-1 check-ins, they provide a safe space for students to discuss their progress, personal challenges, and any concerns they may have. By maintaining regular contact with home, personal tutors ensure that parents and carers are kept informed and involved in their child’s education.
Additionally, they are actively involved in setting targets, reviewing Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and establishing measurable goals, which helps to ensure that students feel supported and motivated in their learning journey.
Enrichment activities
Enrichment activities at Kisharon Langdon College play a crucial role in promoting student wellbeing. These activities provide opportunities for students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build confidence.
By engaging in enjoyable and meaningful pursuits, students can reduce stress, improve their mental health, and foster a sense of belonging. Enrichment activities can also help students to develop social skills, learn to collaborate with others, and build positive relationships with their peers.
Examples of enrichment activities we have done in the past include dog training, raising money for charity through a couch to 5k and Walking Netball.
Resources based around college
When classes feel overwhelming, Kisharon Langdon provides access to sensory spaces where students can spend some time alone or, with a trusted member of staff, to address their sensory needs. Within these spaces students get the chance to meet their sensory needs through games or by making use of items like sensory toys and weighted vests.
Therapeutic input
While students have access to a wide range of therapeutic input, a typical day will involve working with Speech & Language Therapists (SaLT) and Occupational Therapists (OT).
Speech and language therapists work to improve students’ communication skills, which can enhance their self-esteem and social interactions. They address difficulties with speech, language, and communication, helping students to express themselves effectively and build relationships.
Occupational therapists focus on developing students’ daily living skills, promoting independence, and addressing sensory processing challenges. By addressing these areas, both professions help students to feel more confident, capable, and included in their learning environment.
Tutorial Programme
Tutorial sessions offer a valuable space to promote our learners’ wellbeing. By discussing topics such as personal development and British values, students can explore their identity, build self-esteem, and develop a sense of belonging.
Engaging in learner voice meetings empowers students to express their opinions and concerns, fostering a sense of agency and contributing to a positive learning environment. Exploring community, friendships, and relationships helps students to develop social skills, build connections, and combat feelings of isolation.
Finally, celebrating differences and learning to get along with others promotes inclusivity, understanding, and a sense of belonging. Through these various aspects, tutorial sessions contribute to the overall wellbeing and development of our learners.
Zones of Regulation
Zones of Regulation is a framework that helps individuals identify and manage their emotions. The framework uses four colour zones to represent different emotional states:
- Red Zone – Emotions like anger or frustration
- Yellow Zone – Emotions like excitement or anxiety
- Green Zone – Calm and focused emotions
- Blue Zone – Emotions like sadness or fatigue
No zone is ‘better’ than any other but by teaching students to recognise their zones and understand the behaviours associated with each, Zones of Regulation can help them to:
- Identify and label their emotions
- Develop coping strategies
- Improve social interactions
- Enhance academic performance
